About the Boogie
What is the Boogie, anyway?
The Pelican Boardwalk Boogie was created in 1998 by three residents of Pelican, Alaska, for the purpose of bringing live music and arts to their small, remote fishing village.
This year’s festival will feature an festival-style daytime stage for individual performers and concerts, as well as dance performances and a vaudeville-style revue. This venue is intended to encourage all members of the community and visitors alike to socialize while enjoying live music and shows. The evenings will showcase larger dance bands at two different venues and called dances at the community hall. The festival will also include open music jams, dance & music tutorials, community potlucks and traditional fish feeds, an annual “Ducky race,” an open-invitation kickball game, song-writing competitions, and an arts & craft festival.
Boogie Rules
- No partying, camping, or cavorting of any kind in the Gazebo!
- Remember that people actually live here, so respect their space.
- Clean up after yourself... your mother ain't here, and I'm sure as hell not going to pick up your junk, so don't be a dirty rotten hippie.
Mission Statement
Believe it or not, we do have one. We wrote it almost ten years ago, and it’s been our for-real guideline throughout this festival. It goes like this...
The Pelican Boardwalk Boogie exists to:
- Promote arts and cultural events such as the Boardwalk Boogie Music Festival to bring Pelican together with its neighbors.
- Promote an exchange of energy and resources to enhance and support local heritage and way of life
- Keep the level of exchange appropriate, and to scale, so Pelican and its surrounding area are not overwhelmed by outside impact
- Support local, appropriately sized economy
- Foster traditional Alaskan qualities that have shaped this fishing community. Pelican was founded on qualities such as ingenuity and hard work, respect for natural forces, self-sufficiency, tolerance, humor and homemade entertainment
